Today is Heritage Day in South Africa

So we have a day off and lots of sunshine, its said to be a National Braai day, that is a barbacue to some.

Sailing around Hout Bay is a real pleasure when we have nice weather.

Druma our dog was a fine sailor also.

This is the very nice view from the deck of the Hout Bay Yacht Club, Castle Beers are being discounted while the RWC is on!

Hillman Imp wanted in South Africa

The 1967 Singer Chamois we have owned for over twenty (20) years has been sold and will travel to the North in a month or so, I am busy preparing the car by removal of the upgraded parts and taking it back to standard specification. These include re fitting of the 12"steel rims and higher profile tires, re fitting the front drum brakes over the Ford KA disc brakes now fitted, taking off the Monte Carlo lower competition road springs and re fitting the engine that matches the cars licence papers. There is more also but I can talk about that another day?

So I need another similar car for my next Imp based car restoration project.

The move back to an 'As Standard' car is interesting, as the 1971 Hillman Imp Deluxe I restored last year went to an owner who wanted an upgraded but otherwise standard car. The special parts on this Singer Chamois will be re used by myself and possibly on the 1967 Hillman Californian coupe I am re building right now?

Does anyone own or know where I can find one in Southern Africa? a bare shell can also be considered as my parts stash includes many body panels, front bonnet and rear engine cover, suspensions and engines etc etc.

The wreck of the Seafarer off Moullie Point Cape Town South Africa

A new picture, to myself at least!

My continued interest in this wrecking that happened in 1966 was that it was two years before I arrived in Cape Town and that my good friend Notty had all his household belongings on this ship, he was not insured and lost the lot!

The fact that the Rootes Car Company, Scotland had also shipped an order of Hillman Imps to Stanley Motors, the then Rootes agents for South Africa was not lost on me either. There were no more Imp imports excepting private ones after this event.

In this photo of the Seafarer you can still see the remnants of the word "welcome" on the side of Signal Hill, just above the treeline. Who remembers that? I was told that when the Royal family visited in 1947 hundreds of school children dressed in white stood there to mark out the word WELCOME. Presumably trees (or shrubs?) were planted there afterwards. There is no sign of it today.

And news just come in today, Sunday 26th January 2014.

I was on the seafront wall with my father an hour after the Seafarer grounded. She had not yet fractured but the air was thick with the smell of leaking heavy fuel oil. (She was an oil-fired steam turbine ship). My ship was in port at the time and I was spending the night at our Camps Bay home. Our ship’s scheduled departure late that morning was specifically deferred by a few hours to enable the crew to have a gander at the wreck. By daybreak the ship had already broken ahead of the superstructure. A good friend of mine was a Cadet officer on Seafarer at the time and related how within hours of the stranding his cabin on the port side had been smashed open by the pounding seas.

She was a good, well-found ship and was carrying a record import cargo, both in terms of deadweight and value. Terrible waste.

For the start of winter we had a decent day, colder than a month back but no rain today.

Father Christmas is in Hout Bay South Africa

Yes I saw and spoke to him this morning, I also gave him a small donation and wished him well on his trip around the world delivering his toys starting tomorrow night

What a happy and jolly man, the entrance ticket vendor to the harbour joined in the picture.

Hillman Imp rebuild in South Africa

This car is a 1971 Imp Deluxe, a one owner car and Imported by its lady owner many years back.

When I discovered it over sixteen years ago it was in storage and not for sale, then the owner decided he wanted to sell it.

A deal was made and I moved the car to a friend who had an interest in such cars, he stored it six years, then it came to myself. Work was started by turning the car over to work on the underside surfaces and suspensions before the rest of the car.

The customer wanted the best, so the car was inverted on our special jig for turning Imps over on.

We managed to discover just enough of the cars original Chrysler metallic blue paint colour, then matched that to a Samcor / Ford shade and used that.

The pro paint shop who finished the work made a really nice job of the car.

Work started in 2012 and went right through to November 2014, only the best materials went into this car restoration.

Moved by road trailer to the cars owner, they were asked to help a hire car that got into difficulty!

The car has been waiting for a silencer to be made from the original Rootes Car Co drawings, it was fitted recently, this is the kind of detail searches we made on the cars restoration.

The speedo was serviced and calibrated, taken back to read zero miles and right now has clocked all of 2 miles, so its a new Hillman Imp?

We had the cars original engine and that is what we converted to a 998cc size.

South Africas new Hillman Imp

The idea is to make the car as new as we can, the entire car has now been re painted, that is underneath, inside and out.

We will receive the car by a specialist road trailer soon.

The car needs a nice clean with a wash leather then we are ready to start re fitting the shell, all the suspension is in place right now.

Wooden what seen here in Hout Bay South Africa

This came in a few days back, I thought it was another converted and German Mine sweeper, maybe it is?

We had some conversions going on here a few years back, German boats sold to Japan I think, then bought and converted in the Simonstown naval dockyard for service work in Nigeria.

I can only assume as you did that she is an ex-minesweeper if constructed of timber. The low open deck aft is another signature feature of a minesweeper.

It’s possible that she is one of a large number of ex-naval and other craft that have been pressed into commercial service for security / anti-pirate patrols and escort duties in east and west Africa – Nigeria as you mentioned. She looks to be in good condition.

The fact that she’s in Hout Bay means that she must have already been cleared-in at Table Bay or some other SA port.

Any identification markings, flags, etc, on her? Is she shut-down and on shore-power or is she running her generators?

It was only by the next day did I find out the ship was part of a filming production ( i know the name ) and was by then flying a French national flag.
