Hout Bay Yacht Club marina in winter

This is a very typical winters day scene in Hout Bay, given that winter here is often wet and stormy, we do got some really nice spells of calm weather and with warm sunshine and blue skies.

John is reading his book and seated on a bench off yacht Gambula, the bench was fastened down on the aft deck at one time but was donated to the marina.

Sailors walk to their yacht and to be honest this really is winter at its best, the air was a warm 24c (smile)

How nice can this get!

The camera is a Canon G1X digital as my Canon G11 died with its lens extended................

Fast Forward returns home to Hout Bay

This was one of those boats that was meant to go places, which it sure did!

They arrived back yesterday after a ten year circumnavigation.

Just one more look, this is Ken looking back at Hout Bay and in March 2003.

Check the link to find the info on the boat.

Hanging about in the Hout Bay Harbour

This was about a week back, since then the yacht has been into the HBYC boat park, had its bottom paints renewed and is back in the water on its marina berth. The yacht was this years class winner so well done to all those involved as crew.

Click on the picture to enlarge it, the camera was a Canon G11 digital.

Tojan the boats owner had a nasty fall off a ladder I think, thats him with the floppy hat near that rear of the boat and holding the rope, he damaged both of his wrists and is on sick leave for the next six to eight weeks I am told, hope your better soon Tojan!

Wooden what seen here in Hout Bay South Africa

This came in a few days back, I thought it was another converted and German Mine sweeper, maybe it is?

We had some conversions going on here a few years back, German boats sold to Japan I think, then bought and converted in the Simonstown naval dockyard for service work in Nigeria.

http://www.blogspot.co.za/2011/02/storm-petrel-by-another-name.html

Any ideas?

Here is a well qualified comment from a master marine engineer,

Roy,

I can only assume as you did that she is an ex-minesweeper if constructed of timber. The low open deck aft is another signature feature of a minesweeper.

It’s possible that she is one of a large number of ex-naval and other craft that have been pressed into commercial service for security / anti-pirate patrols and escort duties in east and west Africa – Nigeria as you mentioned. She looks to be in good condition.

The fact that she’s in Hout Bay means that she must have already been cleared-in at Table Bay or some other SA port.

Any identification markings, flags, etc, on her? Is she shut-down and on shore-power or is she running her generators?

Roy

It was only by the next day did I find out the ship was part of a filming production ( i know the name ) and was by then flying a French national flag.

The ships markings had been DTC 8799, they had been removed for the filming , a house flag was also flying.

The ship has a really nice bronze anchor.

By 5pm a Table Bay service tug had taken the ship out into the bay and back to where ever the ship is normally berthed?

Out in the bay and on its way.

Another exciting event in the Hout Bay harbour was over.

Hout Bay today lifes a beach

It is on a day like today when the SE gales have backed off.

I took the 1967 Hiillman Californian out for its first drive in many months, things are working well and I was pleased to top the petrol tank up today.

With  some petrol still in the tank, the R150 extra that went into it took the fuel gauge up to 3/4 full !
