Hout Bay Yacht Club marina in winter
This is a very typical winters day scene in Hout Bay, given that winter here is often wet and stormy, we do got some really nice spells of calm weather and with warm sunshine and blue skies.
John is reading his book and seated on a bench off yacht Gambula, the bench was fastened down on the aft deck at one time but was donated to the marina.
Sailors walk to their yacht and to be honest this really is winter at its best, the air was a warm 24c (smile)
How nice can this get!
The camera is a Canon G1X digital as my Canon G11 died with its lens extended................

Local Sailboat Wins Four Prizes in Halifax Race Ocean Race
Falcon, a 1936 New York 32 Class yacht took three first place trophies including first in fleet for ORR (Offshore Racing Rule) Division and the “Over the Hill Gang” trophy. The seventy-five year old sloop took part in the fastest race in the 109 year history of the ocean race that started July 10 at Marblehead and finished 46 hours later in Halifax, Nova Scotia harbor, a distance of 432 miles.
Falcon’s first race was the Bermuda Race of 1936. She has campaigned for years in classic yacht races on the Maine coast. Maine sailors on her crew for the race were Matt Murphy of Penobscot, Greg Smith of Surrey, Tom Lunde of Orrs Island, Chris Miller of Castine and Bob Scott also of Castine and skipper of Falcon.

Superform bending plywood in Poland means GM ORFIN
We are the importers of Superform bending plywood in South Africa and GM ORFIN is the importer in Poland. They have just made a good showing at a boat show there.

The show went well and it was felt that most vistors to the show looked at the GM ORFIN stand.
They say that the Deluxe Light Ply is causing a lot of interest, its waterproof and lighter than okoume marine ply, so should have a future in boats.

12mm – 7 veneer
15mm – 7 veneer
18mm – 7 veneer
Note that even the 6mm thick ply is a five ply, so very strong.

Ok its really a yacht but I guess its fine for me to use the normal term of ship?
The year was 1977 and we were four up on the Ingrid 38 yacht by William Atkin, the yacht was Brer Terrapin. My bottle has since been back to St Helena and on the yacht Ocean Cloud, then onto Salvador, Bahia, Brasil and then as far as Venezuela and Trinidad before sailing all the way back to Hout Bay, near Cape Town in South Africa.
In 1977 and when we arrived at St Helena Island after 13 days sailing time from Cape Town, a guy offered to do us a copy of our yacht sailing in a bottle, the price was about eight Pounds? the deal was we had to also supply the bottle and preferably still full of brandy?
This was one of two we had made, Dennis the skipper and yachts owner had the other one. Sadly the guy had passed on when I next sailed to the island, so Ocean Cloud never had one made.
Facebook has just posted another one but of the yacht Rainmaker which Michele still has, she and her husband Peter, both ex Durban are now in Australia.
The book Cape Towns Traditional Boat Association was a good seller, some copies are still available, contact me to buy a copy, now just R135 per copy plus postage.
All sales income go to Station 8 NSRI here in Hout Bay.

Back in the Canoe
I put in at the feral cat park after a long three weeks out of the canoe. I head up and around Pope's Flat skirting the spartina cut banks watching for specimens to collect. The tide is low and once I turn the upriver tip of the flat (island) I ride down stream on the river's native current.

I pick up a bright yellow bird killer (lost fishing lure) from Carting Island and continue down stopping next among the old pilings and beams that are embedded in the east shore. It doesn't show on maps, but it has the appearance of an industrial landing. In the clutter is the bottom of a wooden speedboat and the corroded remains of a V-8 boat engine. I collect a part from the engine.
A mile more and I enter the Wheeler Marsh noting the usual summer birds as I continue - osprey, mallards, swans, willets, wrens, redwing blackbirds, and lots of egrets. At Milford Point I find two oyster catchers on the rocky beach.
I am early for the tide and find myself waiting for the level to rise. I wait, write and then push on, but I run up to mudflat that I don't have the patience for. I turn back and head upstream, aided by the flood tide.
Summer is a time of harsh light unless one starts early or late. I take only a few photos.

Hillman Imp wanted in South Africa
The 1967 Singer Chamois we have owned for over twenty (20) years has been sold and will travel to the North in a month or so, I am busy preparing the car by removal of the upgraded parts and taking it back to standard specification. These include re fitting of the 12"steel rims and higher profile tires, re fitting the front drum brakes over the Ford KA disc brakes now fitted, taking off the Monte Carlo lower competition road springs and re fitting the engine that matches the cars licence papers. There is more also but I can talk about that another day?
So I need another similar car for my next Imp based car restoration project.
The move back to an 'As Standard' car is interesting, as the 1971 Hillman Imp Deluxe I restored last year went to an owner who wanted an upgraded but otherwise standard car. The special parts on this Singer Chamois will be re used by myself and possibly on the 1967 Hillman Californian coupe I am re building right now?
Does anyone own or know where I can find one in Southern Africa? a bare shell can also be considered as my parts stash includes many body panels, front bonnet and rear engine cover, suspensions and engines etc etc.

With the high tide, the shallows where they hunt are back behind the wall of cattails and wild rice. On the way in, I spot only one egret and it is a 1/4 mile off perched in a tree.
At the eagle nest, an immature bald eagle rests on a nearby branch.
And, we find large numbers of cedar waxwings whenever we find a big patch of frog moss in the water. I've never seen so many in one place as here. It is a new bird to S. so we park the nose of the canoe in the frog moss and watch them feed. It's quite a pretty bird with tones of red and yellow and a bright yellow band at the base of the tail. They speed after distant bugs and then pull up to a flutter in their final maneuver. They take insects that are large enough to be seen by us from 20 yards or more (you never really see what the swallows eat).
